2020 has been an economic and social catastrophe for the global tourism industry. With this in mind, the city of Cannesand the Palais des Festivalshave put in place a new strategy entitled ‘Cannes Résilience’ with the aim of reversing this negative trend.
A sudden cessation of all tourist activity
In normal circumstances the Palais des Festivals plays host to dozens of conferences throughout the year however the dramatic events of 2020 have led to the loss of approximately 700 million euros which represents 73% of its’ annual turnover.
The cancellation of one conference after another and the monumental drop in international visitors has led to a 60% reduction in hoteloccupancy in the same period compared to 2019.
What can Cannes do to reverse this trend?
In collaboration with local business leaders and professionals in the tourist sector the initiative has been working since last November to develop innovative and pertinent strategies. Based on feedback from conference and event organisers and their participants,
the aim is to establish a framework to place the town of Cannes in the best possible position to relaunch the travel sector and ensure a return to activity as soon as circumstances allow. to relaunch the travel sector and ensure a return to activity as soon as circumstances allow.
On a positive note, the crisis also presents an opportunity to reposition the towns offering and rethink old standards.
