International museum of film and the Cannes Film Festival
Over the past 10 years, the town of Cannes has set itself a new challenge, to make Cannes the capital of cinema in France. In addition to the Media campus currently being built at the Bastide Rouge Technopole, there are also plans to create and build an International museum celebrating film and the Cannes Film Festival. The aim is to spotlightFrench cinemaand the future of its role in our culture.
Cannes – The capital of French cinema
The choice of Cannes to host this venue is a logical one :
For the past 70 years the town has hosted the biggest cultural event in the world, the International Cannes Film Festival,
as well as other media and audiovisual events such as Cannes Lions Festival, trade shows MIDEM, MIPTV and MIPCOM which are held here in the famous Palais des Festivals and more recently the newly created Cannes Series festival celebrating new television serial content.
Two possible locations are being considered for theInternational museum of film and the Cannes Film Festival. The first is a site on the Avenue Francis Tonner close to the centre of Cannes and covering a 2 hectare site. The second on Avenue Raymond Picaud which may also include a film studios complex.
Opening set for 2025
The townhall of Cannes hopes to fast track the project and open the museum in 2025. In partnership with Universcience, installations will be split into five themes :
- A permanent exhibit showcasing The International Cannes Film Festival
- A conference and temporary exhibit space to include projection theatres
- An interactive area featuring special effects and new technologies.
- A zone to be made available for companies involved in the film industry to enable them to showcase their activities.
- An area dedicated to the history of cinema and the preservation, restauration and screening of cinematographic heritage.
